Landfill tax rose on 1st April

Landfill tax rose again on 1st April this year, taking the standard rate from £82.60 to £84.40 and the lower rate from £2.60 to £2.65.

Introduced in 1996, the tax is paid on waste disposed of at landfill sites and annual rises are usually met by industry wide price rises.

The standard rate of landfill tax reached £80 per tonne in 2014 and the government then announced that landfill tax would continue to rise in 2015 and 2016 in line with the RPI (to the nearest 5p). Last year, the responsibility for setting landfill tax north of the border was devolved to Scotland.

In the budget last month, the Chancellor confirmed that the standard and lower rates of landfill tax will continue to rise in April 2017 and 2018 in line with the RPI.
